A magical day at Discovery Cove, swimming with dolphins alongside my family, a joyful memory made even more meaningful with time.
Swimming With Dolphins at Discovery Cove.
Like so many people, I grew up imagining what it would be like to swim with dolphins. There’s something magical about them, intelligent, playful, and somehow always smiling. It felt like one of those bucket‑list dreams that belonged to childhood. But in 2004, I finally had the chance to make it real at Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida.
A Family Day I’ll Never Forget.
I went with my mum, dad, my sister, her partner, and my niece. Holly was too young to take part, so the rest of us were split into groups. I’m especially glad my mum and dad were able to do it. My dad wasn’t feeling well that day, though none of us realised how serious things were. He passed away the following year, which makes this memory even more precious. I’m grateful I was there to see both of them experience something so joyful.
Meeting the Dolphins.
We stepped into the lagoon, and almost immediately the dolphins began circling us, curious, playful, and completely unbothered by the crowd of humans splashing about. One by one, we were introduced to them, learning their names, their quirks, and how to interact with them safely.
When it was my turn to swim with one, I was stunned by the sheer power beneath the water. The dolphin pulled me through the lagoon with ease, as if towing someone my size was nothing more than a gentle warm‑up. It felt effortless for the dolphin and unforgettable for me.
What sticks with me just as much as the swim itself were the dolphins’ expressions. They genuinely looked like they were smiling, wide, bright, and full of mischief. It matched the expressions on everyone’s faces in the water.

A Quiet Moment After the Magic.
After the swim, my dad told me he wasn’t feeling well, so I took him back to my home in Orlando while the others stayed to enjoy the rest of the day. At the time, it felt like a small interruption. Looking back, it became one of those moments that stays with you, a reminder of how important it is to share experiences while you can.
Still on the List … in a Way.
I’ve crossed “swim with dolphins” off my bucket list, but there’s still one version of it I’d like to experience someday: swimming with dolphins in open water. Maybe one day I’ll get the chance. Until then, the memory of that day at Discovery Cove, and the people I shared it with, is more than enough.
