A long‑held dream realised: a cruise from Honolulu that visited Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Hilo, and the Big Island, offering volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, and coastal vistas.
Ever since childhood, watching Magnum PI and the island scenes on television, I wanted to visit Hawaii. Friends who had been there reinforced that desire with their stories and photographs. I longed to see the volcanic landscapes, the native flora, and the wildlife that make the islands unique.
The Islands of Hawaii I visited.
In January 2024 I finally made the trip. I booked a cruise that departed from Honolulu (Oahu), circled the main Hawaiian Islands, then sailed north to Alaska before finishing in Vancouver, Canada. During the Hawaiian portion of the voyage I visited Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Hilo, and the Big Island (Hawaii).
Oahu: The Gathering Place.
Oahu is the cultural and logistical hub of Hawaii, combining urban amenities with accessible natural attractions and important historical sites.
Kauai: The Garden Island.
Kauai is the oldest of the main islands and is characterised by dense vegetation, deep valleys, and dramatic coastal cliffs.
Maui: Diverse Landscapes and Coastal Beauty.
Maui offers a wide range of landscapes in a relatively compact area, from volcanic highlands to sheltered beaches.
Hilo: Rainforests and Volcanic Landscapes
Hilo, on the eastern side of the Big Island, is a gateway to volcanic terrain and lush, rain‑fed ecosystems.
Hawaii: The Big Island.
The Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and contains a wide range of climates and geological features, from black‑sand beaches to high volcanic summits.
Reflections.
Visiting the Hawaiian Islands in January 2024 realised a long‑held aspiration. Each island offered distinct landscapes and experiences: Oahu’s cultural and historical sites, Kauai’s dramatic scenery, Maui’s varied terrain, Hilo’s volcanic environment, and the Big Island’s geological diversity. Travelling by cruise allowed a measured pace and the opportunity to see multiple islands in a single journey.
