Summary: A day of fun and nostalgia exploring Disney’s parks with my friend Karys.
At the start of 2017, I stayed at my apartment in Davenport, Florida. I had rented it out previously and needed to clean it up after the tenants left it in a mess, making it difficult to sell. While there, I decided to visit Disney World.
On the 26th of January, I set off early to pick up my friend Karys for a day at Disney World. We bought one-day park hopper tickets and planned to see as much as possible. We managed to visit three parks, enjoy several rides, and had a fantastic day.
EPCOT
Walt Disney’s vision for a futuristic city lives on in EPCOT. Although he passed away before it opened, his ideas shaped the park we visited.
Spaceship Earth
The iconic EPCOT sphere takes visitors on a 15-minute journey through the history of human communication, from prehistoric times to the digital age. Narrated by Dame Judy Dench, it felt like having ‘M’ from the James Bond films guide us through history.
The Seas with Nemo and Friends
Once known as “The Living Seas,” this attraction now features characters from Disney’s Nemo films, teaching visitors about our planet’s oceans.
Living With The Land
A relaxing boat ride through futuristic greenhouses showcasing sustainable agriculture. It’s a reminder that cooperation and innovation could make the world a better place.
Circle of Life
Timon and Pumbaa learn about the importance of nature in this educational film featuring real-world footage from around the globe. A message that world leaders could learn from.
Magic Kingdom
The first Disney park in Florida, filled with classic characters and rides. We had great fun exploring and trying new attractions.
Pirates of the Caribbean
My favourite ride, and the first of the day. I couldn’t stop singing “Yo Ho Yo Ho, it’s a Pirate’s Life for Me.” Karys deserves a medal for putting up with me!
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Karys bravely joined me on this wild ride. It was faster than she remembered, but she handled it brilliantly.
Splash Mountain
Despite initial hesitation, Karys joined me for this thrilling water ride. The 52-foot drop photo is one for the scrapbook!
Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn
We stopped for lunch here. The burger wasn’t great, but the salad and taco bar were excellent. Disney food prices are steep — next time, I’ll go straight for the tacos.
The Haunted Mansion
Another favourite of mine and a first for Karys. Spooky fun all the way.
The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
Karys wanted to try this one, and with no queue, we hopped on. It was light-hearted fun — and yes, I’d do anything she asked!
Animal Kingdom
Dedicated to nature and conservation, Animal Kingdom is one of the largest theme parks in the world.
Kilimanjaro Safaris
We enjoyed a daytime safari through the park’s vast savannahs, spotting animals up close.
Expedition Everest
We skipped this roller coaster due to long queues but plan to return another time.
Primeval Whirl
A surprise hit! Karys screamed and held onto me the entire ride, I laughed the whole way. Definitely one to repeat.
It’s Tough to Be a Bug
A fun 3D show with interactive seat effects. Even without perfect vision, I enjoyed the reactions of those around me ducking from imaginary bugs!
Kilimanjaro Night Safari
We returned after sunset for a nighttime safari. The atmosphere was magical, and some animals were more active after dark.
Return to EPCOT
We ended the day watching EPCOT’s fireworks and laser show, my favourite in all the Disney parks. Finding the car afterwards was another adventure!
Waffle House
After a long day, we stopped for food at a Waffle House. Great service, friendly staff, and a satisfying meal to end the day.
Summary
It was my first Disney visit in years, and I enjoyed it more than expected, perhaps because of the company. The rides, shows, and fireworks were fantastic, though ticket prices remain high. I’ll return someday, hopefully with discounted tickets!
