During my long recovery after the 1990 car accident, I spent months in hospital in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, Hampshire, undergoing operations, treatment, and physiotherapy. I had been pronounced dead three times, and doctors warned my parents that if I survived, I would be paralysed or severely brain‑damaged. Against all odds, I began to recover, supported by my family and the nurses who became close friends.

Rising Spirit

One evening, while resting in a ward with seven other patients, I woke to find the room quiet and dimly lit. Across from me lay an elderly man who had recently been moved in from the geriatric ward. As I looked at him, I suddenly knew he had died, and I saw what I can only describe as his spirit slowly rising from his body and drifting through the ceiling.

I rang the emergency bell, insisting the man had passed away. The nurses told me he was only asleep and asked me to stop disturbing the ward, but I wouldn’t. When they finally checked on him to reassure me, they discovered he was indeed dead. Doctors rushed in with a crash cart, but their efforts to revive him failed.

Afterwards, the nurses asked how I knew. I told them I had seen his ghost leave his body. They couldn’t explain it, but those who knew about my own near‑death experiences simply accepted it. No one ever questioned me about it again, and I’ve never forgotten what I saw that night.
