Location: Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain
Summary: This week began with my 56th birthday, a milestone I never expected to reach. The rest of the week was spent battling a persistent cold, keeping warm at home and working on my website, with only a few short outings when needed.
Monday, 23rd January
I woke up feeling great after yesterday’s Arsenal win. I got a coffee and sat at my computer reading the many birthday messages from friends and family all over the world on my Farcebook page. At around 11:00 I went to the Tipsy Thistle for a full English breakfast to start my birthday properly. Afterwards I set off on the Sharky Mobile to meet Martin for a couple of beers at Pizzeria La Sombre. June was also there, and Amanda stopped by to wish me a happy birthday.
At around 14:30 I headed home. I planned to stop at D’Pollo for food, but they were already closing. I decided to get a Chinese takeaway later, but it was too cold to go back out, so I made porridge instead. I watched football on television before going to bed.
Tuesday, 24th January
I woke around 06:30 and got a coffee. The weather looked bad, so I messaged George to see if he could take me to the supermarket. My disability scooter is great, but not in the rain. George took me to Mercadona and we missed the rain, although it started just as I got home. I briefly saw my cousin Jill in the store, but she did not recognise me at first as it had been so long.
After putting my shopping away, I checked my bank account to see if my pension had been paid in. Last year it was five weeks late, but this time it was only a day late. My cold returned in the afternoon with a headache and wheezing, so I stayed under a blanket. I went to bed early at 21:30.
Wednesday, 25th January
I woke with a headache and wheezing. I got a coffee and worked on my website before having porridge with bananas, raisins, blackcurrants and honey. At around 10:30 I went to the pharmacy to get something for my cold. I planned to have breakfast at La Encarnacion, but the cold wind on the beachfront put me off, so I went straight home. I wrapped up warm, turned the heating on and worked on my website for the rest of the day.
I am fed up with this cold and feeling horrible. I am also dreading my electric bill as I have had the heating on far more than usual. I went to bed at around 21:30.
Thursday, 26th January
I slept well and did not wake until around 08:30. I had porridge with banana, blueberries, raisins and honey, washed down with black coffee as I had no condensed milk for my Cafe Bon Bon. I worked on my website before heading to Lidl to get condensed milk.
After putting the shopping away, I made a coffee and realised I had forgotten the condensed milk. It was too cold to go back out, so I made a pot of tea, took my tablets and spent the rest of the day under a blanket on the sofa.
Friday, 27th January
I woke at 04:30 but managed to get back to sleep until around 08:30. I had porridge with banana, raisins and honey, and a coffee with milk. I vowed to go out today to get the condensed milk I forgot yesterday. At around 12:00 I went to Economy Cash on my mobility scooter and bought the milk. I then stopped at Rocco’s bar for a cafe bonbon with a shot of rum, hoping it would kill off some germs. There was no one around, so after finishing my drink I went home and put the heating on.
The afternoon was spent wrapped in a blanket. I defrosted a chicken and vegetable soup from the freezer and had it for food. This evening I watched the Manchester City vs Arsenal FA Cup match. Arsenal made six changes and narrowly lost 1-0. It was disappointing to go out of the FA Cup, but the performance gave me hope for the Premier League.
Saturday, 28th January
I woke around 07:30, got a coffee and porridge, and sent my niece Holly a birthday message. My immediate family all have birthdays in January, and we will celebrate together in June. I put my washing on and spent a few hours doing laundry and working on my website.
At lunchtime I took the last dose of my cold tablets and went to the pharmacy on my disability scooter. It was closed, but I remembered another one on a back street. I found it and was served quickly with a pack of Ilvico. I went straight home and spent the rest of the day under a blanket. I had another portion of my chicken and vegetable soup and watched a film called “Shotgun Wedding”. It was terrible. I fell asleep several times and had to keep rewinding it. The storyline was ok, but the budget and acting were very poor.
There were no shock FA Cup results this evening, so I went to bed before MOTD.
Sunday, 29th January
I woke at around 08:00 and felt slightly better, although I am taking nothing for granted as this cold keeps hanging on. I had a coffee, porridge and my morning tablets before working on my website. I had a lazy day and dozed off in the afternoon. This evening I was in bed at around 22:30.
