Journal: Week 03 2024

Location: Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain

Summary: A week of errands, website work, new gadgets, social catch ups, football, and worsening ankle pain. You kept busy despite the cold weather and managed two good outings with friends.

Monday, 15th January

I woke on the sofa around 07:00, got a coffee, took my tablets and updated last week’s blog page. After cereal and another coffee, I left at 11:30 on my disability scooter to collect my slippers from Tecnyshop.

After picking them up, I went to the office to meet Martin. Dave joined us, and we chatted until 15:00. I stopped at Mercadona for bread and treated myself to a burger from the deli counter before leaving. I then went to La Petit Bistro to see Alan, who was calling bingo. I joined in the flyer at the end but didn’t win anything. When Alan finished, we had a couple of beers and a chat.

When I got home, a large parcel was outside my door. It was my new computer chair, delivered earlier than expected. I left it boxed to assemble tomorrow. The slippers fit perfectly and will keep my feet warm on the cold stone floors. My knee hurt a lot, but my ankle looked slightly better. I had a coffee and a painkiller, watched TV and made a sandwich before settling on the sofa for the evening.

Tuesday, 16th January

I woke on the sofa again at 04:30, used the bathroom and went back to sleep until 07:30. After coffee, I unpacked and assembled my new computer chair. It is much better than the old one, which no longer stays at the right height.

I worked on my website until 14:00, then cooked chicken with mashed potato. I made a coffee with condensed milk and added the chocolate orange drink powder from Brazil. It tasted lovely.

In the afternoon, I found some training videos for the new video editing software I bought last week. I watched TV in the evening and went to bed around 22:30.

Wednesday, 17th January

I woke around 07:00, had coffee and watched more training videos. I lost track of time until Kate messaged to say she was on her way. She arrived at 11:00, and I scanned documents for her and converted them to PDF. She also collected my old air fryer.

As she was leaving, Amazon delivered my new air fryer. I unpacked it, reorganised the kitchen and then went to Economy Cash for shopping. After lunch, I watched more training videos and attempted to make a new video for my website. The software will take some getting used to, but I kept at it until 20:15.

I watched TV until bed at 22:30.

Thursday, 18th January

I woke at 06:00 feeling good. After coffee and tablets, I worked on adding descriptions to my Brazil photo albums. I worked all morning and stopped at 14:00 for a sandwich before continuing until 17:00, when my sister Karen called. It was great to catch up.

After the call, I had a pizza for tea and worked on my website until 20:15. I put on my pyjamas, watched TV and went to bed around 23:00.

Friday, 19th January

I slept terribly, waking at 00:30, 03:30 and 05:45 before my alarm at 07:00. I dragged myself up and made a terrible discovery: I had run out of coffee. I had ginger lemon tea instead, but it wasn’t the same.

I worked on my website until 10:00, then went to Mercadona for coffee. On the way, I dropped recycling off. After shopping, I realised Mike would be at the café near Oasis, so I went to see him. After coffee, his friends asked me to show him the way to Mercadona. We formed a convoy of two disability scooters, but Mike refused to turn his speed up from snail pace.

I showed him the easiest route and told him he could go inside on his scooter, but he refused and asked for directions to Consum instead. He had complained all morning about Consum’s prices but still insisted on going there. As the saying goes, you can lead a grumpy old man to a cheaper store, but he will still moan and go back to the expensive one.

Back home, I had coffee and worked on my website, adding ALT tags and descriptions to photos. There was nothing on TV, so I went to bed at 22:30.

Saturday, 20th January

I woke at 06:45, had coffee and worked on my website. At 09:00, I made myself a full English breakfast before working again until 13:30, when I stopped to watch Arsenal vs Crystal Palace.

I had predicted Odegaard would score in the fourth minute and that Arsenal would win 6–0. Odegaard did shoot in the fourth minute, but it hit a defender. Arsenal played brilliantly and won 5–0. If that early shot had gone in, my prediction would have been perfect.

I put the heating on and worked on my website for a couple more hours until my eyes were sore. I watched TV, kept dozing off and went to bed at 22:00.

Sunday, 21st January

I woke at 07:00 with both feet in a lot of pain. Even sitting down hurt. The right ankle felt like the damaged ligament had finally broken loose, and the left one felt similar. Sympathy pains, perhaps.

I indexed some pages on Google and had another coffee with chocolate in it. The pain was bad enough that I took painkillers, which knocked me out for a couple of hours. When I woke, I felt better and managed to sit in the kitchen to cook a chilli con carne. I had forgotten I had no chilli powder, but it still tasted great after cooking in the slow cooker all evening. I will use it for pie fillings.

I took another painkiller and went to bed at 22:00.
