Journal: Week 23 2024

Location: Los Alcázares → Marrakech

Summary: A week of long walks, great food, website work, blood tests, friends, charity events, video editing, and finally setting off on your next adventure, Marrakech.

Monday, 3rd June

I woke around 07:15, got a coffee and sat in my new recliner working on my website. At 10:30, I made a fully loaded bowl of porridge, but before I could eat it, Alli called to say she was coming to collect the sack truck. I asked if I could join her to visit June, as I wasn’t sure my disability scooter had enough charge.

I left the porridge soaking in the fridge, collected the sack truck and met Alli outside. After a short visit with June, she offered me a lift to the office. I arrived at 11:45, and Martin was already there. Dave joined us, then Kate, and finally Aria when her school bus arrived.

Afterwards, I walked home via Rio Nalon. I stopped at Rocco’s to see Mick and Nita, then moved on to Harry’s Bar to chat with some locals. Later, I went to Thai Aroi for a chicken Paneng and ordered grilled pork for tomorrow. The curry was fantastic, and I chatted with an English couple. The waitress brought us free tapioca pudding, which was beautiful. I also tried a bubble coffee and will definitely try more.

My legs were aching after the long walk, so I went straight to bed when I got home.

Tuesday, 4th June

I woke around 07:00, got fruit juice and reheated yesterday’s porridge. After Wordle, I spent most of the day working on my website — tagging pages, typing notes for my first day in Kauai and adding photo descriptions.

At 14:00, I took rubbish out and went to the Chino store for a dustpan and brush. Back home, I watched Cry Macho with Clint Eastwood, which was good and gave me a break from the computer. In the evening, I watched Ticket to Paradise with Julia Roberts and George Clooney. Predictable but funny, and Julia Roberts’ smile still brightens the day.

Wednesday, 5th June

I woke at 06:45, drank plenty of water for my blood test, had coffee and did Wordle. I only got it on my final attempt.

I arrived at the doctor’s at 08:50. A new nurse listened when I told him where the best vein was, and he got blood on the first attempt. I was out by 09:07 — 17 minutes from home to test to home again.

I withdrew money from the ATM and went home for porridge and coffee before working on my website. At 11:30, I showered and walked to Buena Vista to meet Jim and Dave. After coffee, we went to Galin’s Bulgarian restaurant at the Oasis. I had liver, Bulgarian moussaka and apple crumble with ice cream. All excellent.

Jim dropped me back in Los Alcázares, where I met Colin for a beer. We were joined by his friend John, and we chatted until we finished our drinks. I went home, watched TV and went to bed around 22:00.

Thursday, 6th June

I woke at 06:30, got coffee and edited a video I filmed in Kauai. It took a while to add graphics and polish it. After porridge, I continued editing until 14:15, when I walked to Buena Vista to meet Lisa for a beer.

We later went to an Indian cookery demonstration at a neighbour’s beach apartment. I hadn’t realised it was a charity event for MABS, and around 30 people were there. I couldn’t see much, but the food was fantastic, and I was given recipe sheets. They raised over €700.

I rested my legs afterwards and binge‑watched Sweet Tooth until bed at 23:00.

Friday, 7th June

I woke at 06:30, had coffee, did Wordle and printed everything I needed for my Marrakech trip. I packed my small bag and binge‑watched more Sweet Tooth before bed at 23:00.

Saturday, 8th June

I woke at 07:15, had coffee and did Wordle. After some website work, I went to Buena Vista at 11:00 for a cooked breakfast. Later, I was picked up and taken to the airport for my trip to Marrakech.

Sunday, 9th June

I spent the day exploring Marrakech and the Medina. A completely different world and a great start to the trip.
