Journal: Week 27 2024

Location: Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain

Summary: A week of medical appointments, physio planning, website work, long chats with friends, great food, a new trip booked, and plenty of football. My leg caused trouble, my scooter battery nearly stranded me, and England continued to frustrate, but I still managed to enjoy markets, meals and planning my next adventure.

Monday, 1st July

I woke around 08:00, had coffee and worked on my website before going to the nurse at 10:30 to have my leg dressed. She tried a different dressing style, hoping it would stick better. Afterwards, I returned home briefly before meeting Martin at La Sombre Pizza. I drank water instead of beer because I had a Traumatologist appointment later.

At 16:15, I went to the doctor’s surgery. The Traumatologist reviewed my Doppler scan and X‑rays. My hip was fine, and there were no blood clots, but my left knee was not good. Normally, they would give an injection, but because I take anticoagulants, they can’t. He prescribed physiotherapy first, and if that doesn’t help, they may need to stop the anticoagulants and do the injection while monitoring me in hospital. I was relieved it wasn’t worse and could start planning my next trip. I watched TV in the evening and went to bed at 22:00.

Tuesday, 2nd July

I woke at 07:30, had coffee and did some indexing. The garage was being cleaned, so all vehicles had to be removed by 10:00. I moved my scooter and took rubbish to the recycling bin.

I visited my insurance agent, and Sofia took copies of the Traumatologist’s letter. She said she would try to arrange the physio before going on holiday and recommended a personal trainer for later. I then met Mike, Tes, Øyvind and Christine for coffee, and afterwards met Martin at La Sombre. Terry and Mick joined us later.

On the way home, I stopped at Harry’s Bar and chatted with Yasmin and her son. When I got home, the garage was already finished, so I put my scooter away and watched TV.

Wednesday, 3rd July

I woke at 08:00, had coffee and a cheese and mushroom omelette, then worked on my website. In the afternoon, I juiced the oranges and pineapple I bought at the weekend and ate lots of cherries, which help with joint pain. I’ve lost 5 kilos since returning from Marrakech, and I hope swimming again will help even more.

After yesterday’s good news about my leg, I started researching more trips — cruises and escorted tours. I looked at Japan, India, Maldives, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. I got carried away and didn’t realise it was 02:00 until I checked the time.

Thursday, 4th July

I woke at 08:00, had coffee and indexed more pages before cleaning the kitchen and bathroom. I shaved my head and showered before Lisa messaged to say she was on her way.

We went to a chiringuito in Los Alcázares for lunch — sandwiches, pastries, mini pizzas, an avocado shake and a mix of Spanish, Moroccan and English desserts with mint tea. A group of Irish musicians played flute, guitar and bodhrán, and one sang folk songs. It was brilliant.

It got too hot, so we went to Club Náutico Mar Menor for coffee on the deck overlooking the water. The breeze was lovely. We saw their Menu del Día and agreed to return soon. Back home, I fell asleep in my massage chair, then worked on my website. The apartment was very hot, so I put the air conditioning on before bed.

Friday, 5th July

I woke feeling good and ready to book my next trip. After checking my quotes, I booked an escorted tour to Japan — a place I’ve wanted to visit for years. I added new Japan pages to my website.

In the evening, I watched Spain beat Germany in extra time and France beat Portugal on penalties. They will meet in the semi‑final. I went to bed as soon as the games finished.

Saturday, 6th July

I woke at 07:00, had coffee and worked on my website. Mike messaged asking for help — as usual, without saying what the problem was. I met him in Los Narejos, had coffee with him and his friends, then went to his house. His TV wasn’t logging in. I rebooted the router, and it worked immediately.

After chatting with him, I went to Mercadona, stopping to photograph some street art. I bought chicken thighs and salad. The cashier commented on my England shirt, and we agreed we wanted an England vs Spain final.

Back home, I ate lunch and had a nap. In the afternoon, I worked on photo carousels and fixed a navigation issue with some CSS overrides. In the evening, I watched England vs Switzerland. England were better than before but still not great. It finished 1–1, and England won on penalties. Holland beat Turkey 2–1.

Sunday, 7th July

I woke at 07:30, had coffee and Wordle, then porridge. I stripped my bed and washed all the white sheets — some still had blood stains from my leg wound and needed rewashing.

I spent the day editing my Hawaii and Alaska cruise videos and uploaded them to YouTube. I added them to my website pages for Honolulu and Waimea Canyon.

In the evening, I watched a film called Boneyard, based on a true story. It was good. Afterwards, I finished my weekly blog and watched TV before going to bed.
