Journal: Week 29 2024

Location: Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain

Summary: A hot week filled with long walks, swims in the Mar Menor, website upgrades, shell collecting, brunch with friends, delivery frustrations, Flamenco music, and steady progress on your site. England reached the Euro final, your Japan trip moved forward, and you kept yourself busy despite the heat.

Monday, 15th July

I woke around 08:00, had a coffee and did the Wordle puzzle. While doing it, I suddenly realised how to fix a coding issue on my website, so I corrected it straight away.

At 11:50, I walked to the bus stop to go to Los Narejos, only to find the timetable had changed again. The next bus was forty minutes away, so I decided to walk to Rio Nalon. When I got there, I thought I could reach the next stop before the bus, so I kept going. By the time I reached Mercadona, I was puffing like a steam train, and the heat was getting to me.

The bus stop had no shelter, and the pavement was broken. I stumbled while reading the timetable and only just stopped myself from falling. I rested, but the heat was too much, so I kept walking. At the next roundabout, I saw Lisa in her car. She called out, and I waved, but she continued on her way home.

I rested again in the shade, then continued in short bursts until I reached La Estribor, where I sat in a window nook before walking the last few metres to meet Martin and Dave. I could not speak at first, and my heart was pounding. I ordered a large bottle of water with ice. They told me I was mad for walking, and as we talked, the bus passed us. I had beaten it, but I will not do that again in the midday sun.

I texted Lisa to apologise for not answering her earlier. She offered me a lift home later, which was helpful as I needed shopping. She picked me up at 15:00, we went to Mercadona, and she dropped me home. I stayed in with the air conditioning on.

Tuesday, 16th July

I woke early, had coffee and walked to the Mar Menor for a swim. The water was warm and clear, and the only jellyfish I saw were the harmless fried egg ones. After swimming, I showered and worked on my website.

I began making changes to the navigation. It looks like a small visual change, but it is a huge job behind the scenes and will keep me busy for a while.

Wednesday, 17th July

I woke at 07:30, had coffee, did Wordle and went for another swim. The water felt like a lukewarm bath. After swimming, I returned home and worked on my website all day. I went to bed around 23:00.

Thursday, 18th July

I woke at 08:00 intending to swim, but the wind had made the Mar Menor choppy. Instead, I had coffee, did Wordle and worked on my website all day. I went to bed around 01:00.

Friday, 19th July

I expected my new Arsenal shirt to arrive today. I went swimming and took a small pot to collect sea shells. After an hour in the water, I returned home and spread the shells around one of my cacti. It looked much nicer than bare soil.

I showered, had coffee and ordered protein powder from Amazon. Economy Cash was full for deliveries, so Amazon suggested a locker at Dia, which is even closer.

I worked on my website all day. At 16:30, Seur messaged to say my shirt would be delivered on a different day. I worked until around 02:00.

Saturday, 20th July

I woke at 08:30 with a bad backache. I went swimming again and collected more shells, which I used to decorate more plant pots. I will gradually replace all the stones with shells.

At 11:30, June picked me up. I had a bookmark for her collection, and we went to El Bar in San Cayetano for coffee. I ended up having a large English breakfast, which became brunch, and with brunch comes wine, so I had two glasses. We chatted for hours.

During brunch, Seur messaged to say they had tried to deliver my parcel again, even though they had not told me they were coming. They are the worst delivery company in Spain. When I got home, I arranged for the parcel to be delivered to a collection point instead.

In the afternoon, I worked on my website while listening to the stage being set up for the Flamenco show. I went downstairs at 22:00 to watch the start, filmed a little, then returned home because my legs were aching. I put the air conditioning on and went to bed at 02:00.

Sunday, 21st July

I woke, had coffee and went for another swim, collecting more shells. After an hour, I returned home, showered and worked on my website until 12:30.

For lunch, I went to Dia and bought a rotisserie chicken. I ate the legs and wings and saved the rest for sandwiches and omelettes. I picked up my Amazon delivery from the locker while I was there.

I spent the rest of the day working on my website and went to bed around midnight.
