Location: Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain
Summary: This week I spent a lot of time on my genealogy research, worked on my website, met friends for drinks, dealt with noisy nights, had my ingrowing toenail sorted out and watched some dramatic football. I also enjoyed some lovely meals, made progress on my Alaska videos and found new branches of my family tree.
Monday, 16th September
I was woken again at 03:00 by noisy people slamming car doors and shouting. I managed to get back to sleep, only to be woken again two hours later by the road sweeper. I finally got up at 08:30, had coffee and checked my messages before doing some work on my website.
I met Martin at La Sombre just after midday. Dave joined us, and we chatted until Aria’s bus arrived at 13:20. I stayed talking with Martin until 14:00, then went home to continue working on my website.
Later, Alison messaged to see if I wanted a drink, so we met at Buena Vista and spent a couple of hours chatting in the sun. I felt very lucky to live somewhere so beautiful and peaceful now that the summer tourists have gone.
Back home, I cooked a piece of steak with salad, fell asleep in front of the TV and watched Police Interceptors until I went to bed at 22:00.
Tuesday, 17th September
I woke at 07:00, had coffee and chatted online with Lynn in Australia. It is always great catching up with distant relatives and hearing family stories.
I met Martin at 11:40, and Dave arrived with his daughter Lesley. We chatted until 14:00. Back home, I worked on my laptop and did some genealogy research. I may start doing research for others when I return from my holiday.
In the evening, I fancied a pizza, so I went to La Rucola and ordered a Verona pizza. It was okay, but my homemade pizzas are better. I spent the rest of the night doing family tree research and went to bed at 23:00.
Wednesday, 18th September
I slept well and had a bizarre dream about helping King Charles rearrange melon beds on a rooftop garden in Downing Street. I have no idea what that was about, but maybe it is a sign I should tidy my balcony.
After coffee and Wordle, I took recycling out and went to Economycash for rolls and groceries. I spent the afternoon and evening tracing new branches of my family tree and found a new Morris branch and a lead on the Lewis side.
Thursday, 19th September
I woke at 06:00, had coffee and porridge with bananas, cherries and protein powder, then worked on genealogy before getting ready for my appointment. Alison and Lottie picked me up at 10:15 and drove me to San Pedro del Pinatar.
The nurse quickly dealt with my ingrowing toenail, cut all my nails and filed them. She told me to use iodine for a couple of days and come back if it grows inward again.
I met Alison and Lottie for coffee afterwards, then went home and spent the rest of the day researching my 3rd great‑grandfather, Lewis Lewis. I discovered that some of his children emigrated to Australia, opening a whole new branch of the tree.
Friday, 20th September
I got up early and spent the entire day tracing my family tree. A storm rolled in with thunder, lightning and heavy rain, so staying indoors was the only option. I settled into my chair and worked on genealogy all day.
Saturday, 21st September
I woke at 05:30, had coffee and continued my research. While working on Martin’s family tree, I noticed that some of his distant relatives share surnames with mine and lived in the same place. We may be very distant cousins.
I tried to watch football in the afternoon but spent more time researching. I finally turned the computer off at 22:00 and went to bed.
Sunday, 22nd September
I woke at 06:00, had coffee and porridge with bananas, walnuts and cherries, then continued my genealogy research.
In the afternoon, I watched Manchester City vs Arsenal. City scored early, but Arsenal equalised and then went 1-2 up. Trossard was sent off for a ridiculous second yellow card for time‑wasting, even though City players had done the same.
Arsenal switched to a 5-4-0 formation and defended for their lives. I got so wound up that I turned the TV off and continued my research instead. When the match finished, I turned the TV back on and saw that City had equalised in the 9th minute of injury time. A 2-2 draw was a good result in the end.
After listening to pundits talk nonsense, I turned the TV off, did a bit more genealogy and went to bed at midnight.
