Sailing the Atlantic: Day 3

Location: Atlantic Ocean.

Summary: A quieter third day crossing the Atlantic on the Costa Favolosa, with sunshine, quizzes, a successful gym hunt, and the usual mix of shipboard surprises.

I woke up, showered, and headed to the atrium bar for a morning coffee before making my way to the aft pool on Deck 9. I sat reading my Kindle until around 11:00, enjoying the calm start to the day.

Leaving the pool, I wandered to the Palatino Grand Bar and watched a dance lesson, Gail included. At 11:30, she joined me for a video quiz. We did well, scoring 7 out of 10 and finishing in second place.

At 12:00, I went to the restaurant and sat with Dwight and Tessa. I had carrot and orange soup, followed by chicken with vegetables and potatoes. The chicken was overcooked and mostly left untouched, but the coffee cake for dessert made up for it.

As we finished, a German man named Marcus joined us, someone Dwight and Tessa had met before. I recognised him from The Voice competition the other night. He told me the organisers had given him the wrong song twice, which explained the chaos I’d witnessed before leaving.

Cocktails & Kindle Time

After lunch, I returned to the pool and treated myself to a non‑alcoholic strawberry cocktail topped with whipped cream. It was so good I had another while reading in the sun.

At 14:30, I decided to try finding the gym again. Thanks to Rosa’s directions, I actually managed it this time. The gym was almost empty, and I found a cycling machine facing the bow with a huge window, a great view for someone who rarely uses gym equipment.

The hardest part wasn’t the exercise but figuring out how to adjust the seat for my long legs. Once sorted, I cycled for about 40 minutes before heading back to my cabin for a rest and a shower.

A Quiz Without Mal (A Wise Decision)

Around 16:00, I returned to the Palatino Grand Bar for the trivia quiz. I chose not to join Mal’s team, he’d been driving me up the wall, and the fun had gone. Instead, I sat alone, but Dwight and Tessa soon joined me. We had a great laugh and scored well, but the real win was how much I enjoyed it.

After the quiz, I went to the Camelot Wine Bar to read and listen to music until 19:00. For dinner, I had a lovely onion soup. My main course was supposed to be prime rib, my favourite when I lived in America, but what arrived was sliced beef in spicy gravy with mashed potatoes. Not prime rib by any stretch. Dessert, however, was a perfect coconut flan.

The Circus Show (Sort Of)

After dinner, I went to the theatre with Gail and sat with Dwight and Tessa for the Circus Show. Once again, I was disappointed. The main singer was excellent, but the dancers were distracting and didn’t seem connected to the routines. The magician and juggler were good, but the show lacked any real cohesion.

After the show, I stopped at the quiet bar on Deck 5 for a drink, then walked across to the piano bar. I spotted Marcus again, so we chatted and had a drink before heading into the piano bar together. When the music finished, I went back to my cabin for an early night, around 01:00.
