Costa Toscana cruise ship docked in Savona harbor with the Priamar Fortress and Torre Leon Pancaldo visible under a clear blue sky.

Port of Savona

Location: Savona, Italy

Summary: My day in Savona didn’t go quite as planned, the Genoa excursion was cancelled, but it turned into one of the most relaxing days of the whole Costa Toscana cruise. From a quiet sunrise on my balcony to a waiter rescuing me with a perfect window seat and an over‑the‑top lunch, Savona became a slow, indulgent pause in the trip. Between cappuccinos, writing spots, and evening views from my veranda, this stop was all about unwinding and enjoying the ship at my own pace.

Morning Docking at the Port of Savona

The Costa Toscana docked early in the morning. I had initially booked a half‑day tour to Genoa, but Costa Cruises cancelled it due to low participation. Instead, I decided to enjoy a quiet day on board. I began with a peaceful moment on my veranda, admiring the Savona coastline as the city slowly came to life.

Breakfast with a View

I headed to the buffet restaurant for breakfast and ordered a freshly made cheese, ham, and pepper omelette. The dining area was bustling, and finding a table was a challenge. A kind waiter noticed my swollen leg and stepped in to help, guiding me to a window seat overlooking the city. He brought me fresh orange juice, followed by pancakes with chocolate sauce, bacon, sausages, and a perfectly fried egg.

Quiet Spaces & Coffee Breaks

After breakfast, I grabbed my tablet and went searching for a quiet place to write. I settled into a lounger on Deck 16 near the pool, shaded and peaceful at first. A cappuccino, and later an iced coffee, kept me company as I typed up my travel notes.

When the noise level rose, I relocated to the Colosseum bar on Deck 6, then later to the Kartell Café on Deck 8. There, I enjoyed a peach iced tea while admiring a group of elegantly dressed Italian ladies who looked like they’d stepped straight out of a fashion magazine.

Lavish Lunch Experience

At 14:00, I found a restaurant for lunch. After scanning the menu via QR code, the waiter surprised me by bringing all the starters:

  • Ham, salami, cheese, olives, carrots, artichoke, and cabbage.
  • Devilled eggs on lettuce and tomato.
  • Thinly sliced roast pork with greens.

Next came a bowl of pasta with Bolognese sauce, followed by all the main courses:

  • Six large prawns.
  • Two onion omelettes.
  • Three chicken thighs in tomato and onion sauce with roasted potatoes.

Dessert included watermelon and a delicious date pie, plus an extra slice before I could make my escape.

Evening Views & Entertainment

After a rest in my cabin, I enjoyed the illuminated view of Savona from my balcony. Later, I met Brian, Sue, Michael, and Lynda for dinner. Still full from lunch, I skipped the meal but happily joined in with white wine and beer as we shared stories from the trip.

The evening wrapped up with cocktails, Bahama Mama, Mai Tai, and a White Russian, and live entertainment, including a saxophonist in the Leonardo Bar and a Madonna tribute by the all‑girl group Ultramarine at the Colosseum bar.
