Location: Malaga, Spain.
Summary: A full day exploring Malaga’s historic landmarks, winding streets, markets, and viewpoints, shared with good company and rounded off with dinner, entertainment, and the usual pre‑departure rituals.
Today the MSC Lirica docked in Malaga, Spain, a city I had never visited before. After breakfast and coffee on board, I met Helen, and we took a shuttle bus to the port entrance. From there, we walked into the town centre to begin our exploration.
Roman Theatre & Historic Landmarks
We visited the Roman Theatre, then passed by the Cathedral of Málaga and wandered through the peaceful Dark Gate Gardens. Our goal was Gibralfaro Castle, but the uphill walk was challenging. Helen kindly waited for me several times before we reached the top and took in the panoramic view of Málaga’s port.
We descended through a tunnel beneath the castle and continued downhill. My legs were aching, so we stopped at Mercy Square for a tostada and coffee at a small café. The break helped ease the pain before we resumed our walk.
Churches & Architecture
We explored a maze of Malaga’s streets, admiring small churches and grand architecture. Eventually, we reached the dry riverbed of the Guadalmedina and turned back toward the port and shopping district.
While walking through Malaga, we bumped into Kathy and Tony from the ship and chatted briefly. Helen and I later stopped at Atarazanas Central Market for tapas and drinks. We continued through Plaza de la Constitución and visited La Canasta bakery, where we sat on the balcony overlooking the square and shared a pastry.
Return to Ship & Evening Entertainment
My leg was swollen and painful, so I took the bus back to the ship while Helen walked. After showering and resting, I packed my case and prepared for the evening. Dinner with Helen, Jean, and Shaw was delicious, followed by entertainment in the main theatre and drinks at the Beverley Hills Boulevard Bar.
After the show, Jean retired early, and Helen walked her back. We ended the night with a drink and conversation before heading to our cabins. I returned just after midnight and found a note requesting that luggage be placed outside by 23:30, which was too late for me, but I put my case out and hoped it would be collected.
