Summary: A relaxed and memorable day in Cairns. Morning swims, wandering the town, good food, more birthday beers, and a fun night at the Australian Legion Club.
Cairns
After getting up I decided to do all my washing while I was somewhere I could do it easily. I took all my dirty washing to the laundry in the hotel. As I was going in, I saw someone from my tour just leaving after putting their washing on, while I was putting my washing in the machine another person from my tour came in to do the same. I put all my washing in a machine and set it running before going back to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. As I went up to the restaurant I was passed by someone else on my tour going to the laundry room. It seemed that everybody had the same idea and to get their washing down before we left for Uluru.
I sat and ate breakfast and read my Kindle for a while until I knew my washing would have finished. I went back to the laundry room, took my clean washing out and put it in a tumble dryer and then went to sit by the hotel swimming pool. I spent a couple of hours around the pool at the hotel, I did a bit of swimming and lay on a deck chair reading my Kindle until it got too hot. I left the pool area and collected all my laundry and took it back to my room.
Sometime in the late morning, I went for a walk to look around Cairns and to get a couple of things to eat and drink during the day, crisps, a roll, and some electrolyte drinks. As I was walking back to the hotel I saw Chris, and she asked if I knew where the Woolworths I had just been to was, so I walked her back to it. I again started back towards the hotel and I bumped into Nic, who asked the same question. I walked her to the shop and waited while she got her shopping, and then walked back to the hotel again.
Back at the hotel, I saw Steve, and we decided to have a walk around Cairns to get some lunch. As we left, walking to the area where the bars and restaurants were, some large black clouds came over, and it started to rain very heavily. We were opposite PJ O'Brien's Bar, and quickly went in to get out of the rain. We ordered a couple of pints of Guinness and ordered two steak with Guinness pie and chip lunches. As we sat drinking, eating and chatting, Nic messaged me and asked me where I was. I told her, and she said she would join us in a couple of minutes. Within five minutes, she had joined us and got a drink. The three of us sat drinking and chatting, while Steve and I finished our meals.
After walking back to the hotel I went back down to the pool again, I sat reading my Kindle and a few of the ladies from the trip joined me at different times. A couple of them appeared briefly, carrying beer for me and again wishing me a happy birthday for yesterday. We were all going to the Cairns branch of the Australian Legion Club for dinner tonight, and the ladies only stopped briefly to give me a beer and then left to get ready. I eventually left the pool to go and get ready, but thanks to the generosity of all the ladies, I was already quite merry.
Dinner at the Legion was good, and the evening went quickly. After dinner, Nic and I started betting on the horse racing on the large TV screens and playing bingo. Everybody else left us there and went back towards the hotel or other places in Cairns. Nic and I stayed an hour so longer waiting for our last couple of races to be run. We were only betting a few dollars, but it was quite exciting and we won a few dollars. When we left, we walked back to the hotel. Nic and I went to the hotel bar and were joined by Rispa, Colleen and Debbie for a while. We sat drinking and chatting until the bar closed, and we all went back to our rooms.
