A Last Look At Cusco & The Journey Home.

A final wander through Cusco’s historic buildings, a slightly chaotic airport experience, long flights home, and some heartfelt reflections on a journey that fulfilled both a personal dream and a promise to your dad.

Cusco tour.

This morning, I joined a few others for a short tour of Cusco, visiting the buildings we couldn’t see yesterday because of the Bank Holiday closures.

We were shown around what was possibly the most impressive cathedral of the entire trip, the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. We also visited the Iglesia del Triunfo (the Church of Triumph) and the Qurikancha, the Golden Place. After the tour, we returned to the hotel to pack our belongings before being taken to the airport.

Airport.

At the airport, I was escorted by another lady from the tour; she was in a wheelchair, and I was using my walking stick, so we were taken along the “quick route” to our gate. We waited there for a while before another airport employee appeared to inform us that we were at the wrong gate entirely. The first person had taken us to the wrong one, so off we went again.

The flight to Madrid was comfortable, and the time passed quickly. I couldn’t sleep, but I caught up on several films I didn’t even know existed. Our connection to the onward flight was smooth, and I hoped my checked luggage would make the journey with me.

At Heathrow, I was relieved to be reunited with my bags, and even more delighted to see my friend Tony waiting to drive me back to Fareham. I was looking forward to getting home and having a proper cup of tea.

My Final Thoughts.

I’m glad I did this trip. I met some lovely people and saw some incredible places, a few of which I will never forget. Peru is a place I would recommend to anyone. I’ve done it now, and I probably won’t return, but I’m grateful I managed to do what my dad never could.

Between us, Dad, we got there. We saw it all. And for what it’s worth, you wouldn’t have liked the guinea pig anyway.
