Summary: A brief visit that left a mixed impression. The zoo felt dated, with enclosures that were far too small and animals showing signs of restlessness. After a short guided walk and a ride on the overhead cable car, it was clear this wasn’t an experience we wanted to linger on.
Not my favourite zoo
Our stop at the San Diego Zoo was short, and honestly, I didn’t mind leaving early. At the time of our visit, the zoo felt dated and in real need of major improvement. The animal pens were far too small, and several animals were pacing restlessly in their enclosures, a clear sign they were not thriving.
Compared with places like Busch Gardens or Animal Kingdom in Florida, this zoo fell well short. Those parks give their animals far more space and create surroundings that feel much more natural and humane.
During our brief time there, we joined a quick guided walk and took the overhead cable car across the enclosures, but that was enough for us.
Fun Fact
The Skyfari aerial tram at the San Diego Zoo was originally opened in 1969 and has carried millions of visitors over the zoo’s enclosures. It was one of the first gondola-style cable cars in the United States designed specifically for a zoo.
