Summary: A peaceful and beautiful stop on the Southern States tour, with lush surroundings, wildlife, and a memorable sunrise swim in the Atlantic Ocean.
Jekyll Island was beautiful, and if I ever win the lottery, I could easily imagine buying a home there. The houses sat on large plots of land surrounded by lush green landscapes, giving the whole island a calm and spacious feel. The beach was lovely, and I enjoyed watching deer playing in the dunes as I headed out for a sunrise swim in the Atlantic.
The island sits off the coast of Georgia in Glynn County and is one of the Sea Islands, as well as one of the Golden Isles of Georgia. Visitors can explore bike trails, walk along long stretches of beach and sandbars, or wander through the historic district, which includes buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The island is also rich in wildlife, with many mammals, reptiles, and birds living and breeding in the inland marshes.
Sunrise Swim
On the morning after our overnight stop on Jekyll Island, I got up early so I could swim in the Atlantic Ocean. I made it to the beach just as the sun was rising, and it looked beautiful. I was lucky that a lady I met on the coach, Niki, was also awake and kindly offered to take some photos of me swimming in the Atlantic.
The water was cold, but it was worth it. On this holiday, I was able to say that I swam in the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic all on the same trip, which is not bad going for one tour.
Fun Fact
Jekyll Island was once an exclusive winter retreat for some of Americaโs wealthiest families, including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Morgans. At one point, the Jekyll Island Club was considered the richest and most exclusive club in the world. It can now also boast that me and my Uncle Dave have stayed there.
