A colourful day trip to the Águilas Carnival turned into a lively mix of crowds, costumes and coastal chaos.
Back in early 2018, a few friends at a local quiz asked if I fancied joining them for the Águilas Carnival, one of the most famous festivals in the Murcia region. I’d never heard of it, but the promise of colour, music, and a day out from Los Alcázares was enough to get me on the coach.
The journey wasn’t long, but carnival traffic turned it into a slow crawl. By the time we reached Águilas, the streets were already packed with visitors. Finding a good viewing spot took some determination, but once the parade began, the atmosphere made every shuffle worthwhile.
The Águilas Carnival Parade was a spectacular mix of elaborate costumes, energetic music, and nonstop movement. Children opened the show, a thoughtful touch that kept things family‑friendly, followed by adults in full glitter, feathers, and high‑energy choreography. I walked the parade route twice just to take it all in.
The only downside to a one‑day trip is that you miss the evening highlights. Our coach left before the famous fireworks at the port, which I fully intend to catch next time. An overnight stay in Águilas is definitely the smarter choice if you want the full carnival experience.
If you’re planning a visit, book early, arrive early, and wear comfortable shoes. And if you want to enjoy the fireworks, nightlife, and a more relaxed pace, stay the night. The Águilas Carnival is one of Spain’s most colourful and well‑organised celebrations, absolutely worth adding to your travel list.
