Rafting on Segura River.

Rafting on the Segura River.

A brilliant day on the Segura River with friends, sunshine, splashes, weirs, swims, and plenty of laughs. A fun, refreshing adventure that I’d happily do again.

My friends Bernice and Angelia told me they were going river rafting on the Segura River and asked if I wanted to join them. I’d been before with my friend Mick and remembered how much fun it was, so I didn’t hesitate. We were joined by friends from Los Alcázares and a few from the UK, a great mix of people for a day out on the water.

Setting Off.

A coach picked us up in Los Alcázares, and after a quick comfort break en route, we arrived at the starting point. We were split into groups, assigned to our rafts, and pushed off from the shore, with a splash of cold water to wake us up properly.

Once we were all afloat, we began drifting downstream through some beautiful countryside. The Segura is a lovely river, lined with greenery, wildlife, and the occasional castle peeking out from the hills. We passed under bridges, bounced over a small weir, and enjoyed the calm stretches between the more exciting bits.

The Big Weir.

Before reaching the large weir, the organisers shuffled people between boats to balance the weight. It felt a bit like musical chairs, but wetter. The anticipation built as we approached the drop, that mix of nerves and excitement that makes these trips so much fun.

When our raft finally went over, it plunged down, almost disappearing under the water before popping back up like a cork. We paddled across to a small beach where we stopped for a break.

Lunch and a Swim.

We had about half an hour on the beach to enjoy a sandwich and a drink. Some of us went for a swim in the deeper water below the weir, though getting there was a workout thanks to the strong current. Still, the cool water was worth it after sitting in the sun.

Back in the rafts, we continued downstream. About half a mile before the end, I decided to jump in and float the rest of the way. The water was refreshing, and it was peaceful drifting along, watching the scenery slide by.

The Finish.

When the rafting ended, most people headed back to the storage area to change, but I just changed by the riverbank and watched the remaining boats come in. About half an hour later, the coach arrived to take us all back to our pickup points, for me, Bernice, Angelia, and a few new friends, that meant returning to Los Alcázares.

Summary.

This was another fantastic day out on the Segura River. The scenery is beautiful, the weirs add just the right amount of excitement, and the chance to swim at the end is perfect on a hot day. If you get the opportunity to go river rafting here, I highly recommend it.
