Today, I went on a tour of Amritsar, visiting many places, including the Durgiana Temple, the Tower of Baba Atal Ria, Jallianwal Bagh and Wagah.
Durgiana Temple.
The Durgiana Temple, aka Shri Durgiana Mandir, is a Hindu temple situated in the city of Amritsar in Punjab. Although it is a Hindu temple, its architecture is similar to that of the Sikh Harmandir Sahib. The temple derives its name from the Goddess Durga, the chief Goddess who is worshipped here. Murtis of Lakshmi and Vishnu are also located and worshipped in the temple.
I visited the temple today, but we only spent a short time there.
Tower of Baba Atal Rai.
The Tower of Baba Atal Rai is a famous Gurdwara in Amritsar dedicated to Atal Rai, a son of Guru Hargobind and Mata Nanaki. It consists of nine stories and is around forty metres in height.
Jallianwal Bagh.
Jallianwala Bagh is a historic garden and memorial of national importance close to the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab, India, preserved in the memory of those wounded and killed in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that took place on the site on the festival of Baisakhi Day, 13 April 1919. The 7-acre site houses a museum, gallery and several memorial structures. It is managed by the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust and was renovated between 2025 and 2027.
Wagah, banging of the gates ceremony.
The ceremony at the Attari–Wagah border is a daily ceremony that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959. The ceremony starts every evening immediately before sunset with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both sides and ends with the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. One infantryman stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened, and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are then folded, and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again.
