My flight from Vancouver arrived back in Madrid today.
Madrid, Spain.
After landing, I got through customs and immigration and collected my case very quickly. I went outside the airport to the place where the Uber taxis picked up. I ordered an Uber and waited for it to arrive in a couple of minutes. After waiting for around 40 minutes and watching my Uber taxi appear on the tracking part of their app immediately but not moving afterwards, I complained via the app and another Uber cab was sent to me.
I waited another 20 minutes, and the cab still hadn't arrived, so I cancelled it and used the Cabify app to get a ride to my hotel. The Cabify car turned up within a few minutes, and the driver helped me into the car and put my case in it. A short time later, he dropped me off at the hotel and placed my case by the hotel door. Thank you, Cabify. Shame on you, Uber.
When I went into the hotel, the man at the reception desk recognised me from my previous visits and gave me the downstairs room to make it easier for me. He also arranged a taxi for me tomorrow morning to take me to the train station for the last leg of my journey home. As soon as I got to my room, I lay down on my bed and slept for about four hours. Once I woke up, I had a shower and then walked around the corner to the bars and restaurants in Barajas.
I sat outside a bar called Lizarran, looked at the menu and decided to order a couple of tapas and some beer. The bar was full of people eating and drinking, and I sat there for a couple of hours, watching people go about their day. The food was delicious, and the price of my tapas and beer was excellent. When I left, I walked into a small grocery shop in the square and bought a large bottle of water before returning to my hotel.
As soon as my head hit my pillow, I was asleep again. I may not be able to sleep on planes, but I don't have a problem anywhere else.
