American road trip 1980.
When I was 13 years old & my sister was 11, our mum & dad took us to the USA. It was the trip of a lifetime & one that stoked the embers of my interest in travel. I remember how they told us we would be going on holiday. We were all sitting at our dining table at Christmas the year before the holiday, mum & dad told me & my sister that we were going to go on a family holiday the following year & that we wouldn't have much for Christmas because of the cost. They told us we could choose where we wanted to go, the idea was that we all secretly wrote where we wanted to go on holiday on a scrap of paper & whichever place got the most votes we went to.
I think I chose Butlins at Bognor Regis & my sister chose Black Gang Chine on the Isle of Wight & these were the first two places read out. Next came my mum's choice & she chose Disney World in Florida. We all laughed at this until my dad's choice was read out & he chose Disney World in Florida as well. Mum & dad then told us that we would be going on a road trip right across America & that we could pick the places we wanted to go.
These stories are my memories of our journey across America in 1980.
On our road trip across America in 1980, we began our trip in Florida, at Orlando. We drove South to the Florida Keys, crossing the Everglades & turning back North to visit Disney World & Cape Canaveral.

The second state that we went through on our 1980 American road trip was Alabama but we didn't stop there, we drove through Alabama to Mississippi for an overnight stop & on to the fourth State we would go through, Louisiana on the I10.

We had already crossed & stayed overnight in Mississippi on our way to New Orleans & we travelled across the Magnolia State again on our way to Memphis in Tennessee.

On our drive across America, we travelled through Arizona. A beautiful state that at the time I probably didn't appreciate as much as I would now if I were to do this trip again.
