Alan Morris on the Great Wall of China.
Alan Morris on the Great Wall of China.

As a small boy, I was fascinated by China and had always wanted to visit it. One of the things I wanted to do if I visited China was to walk a section of the Great Wall of China.

What is the Great Wall of China?

The Great Wall of China is an extensive bulwark erected in ancient China, consisting of numerous walls built throughout several millennia across northern China and southern Mongolia. It was constructed as a series of fortifications to protect against various nomadic groups from the Eurasian Steppe. The wall runs about 13,171 miles from the Jiayuguan Pass in the west to the Hushan Mountains in Liaoning Province in the east.

My walk on the Great Wall of China.

After speaking with my doctor, who advised me that visiting the Great Wall of China would be beneficial for my health, I booked a tour of China the same day. This tour of China was fantastic, and my visit to the Great Wall of China was an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend to anyone.

We were taken to the base of the Great Wall at Mutianyu. To get to the wall, we went on a cable car that ran from the parking area at the base to the top of the wall. Once at the top of the wall, we were given time to explore on our own before meeting again at the base. I did manage to walk a fair distance with the two girls I was with, Mel and Tracy. The view from the top was amazing.

The section I visited was very steep and is not for the faint-hearted. There was one section at the first tower that was so steep that I went down on my bum. I felt very foolish until I realised that I wasn't the only one doing it and that some people didn't and just looked at the wall from the first tower.
