These photos were taken during my tour of Kauai, where I visited the Wailua River, Fern Grotto, Opaekaa Falls, and Hanalei Beach. Click on any image to see a larger version of the image with a description.
People queueing to board boats for a tour of the Wailua River Valley.
The bird in the image next to the Fern Grotto is a rooster. Roosters are male chickens, known for their bright plumage and distinctive crowing. In Hawaii, roosters are quite common, especially on the island of Kauai, where they roam freely and are a notable part of the local wildlife.
This photo is of Alpinia purpurata, commonly known as red ginger, ostrich plume, or pink cone ginger. It is a striking tropical plant belonging to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and is native to the Maluku Islands and the southwest Pacific region. I saw it near the Fern Grotto.
Hanalei Valley. A verdant valley floor with cultivated fields, likely taro fields, characteristic of the Hanalei Valley's agricultural heritage. The mountains in the background are supposed to have been Puff the Dragon in the Peter, Paul & Mary hit song, Puff the Magic Dragon.
